📖 KEY DEFINITION Tourism has only ONE paper. Paper 1 = 200 marks over 3 hours (180 minutes), divided into five sections (A to E) with 10 questions. Answer ALL questions and start each question on a new page. A non-programmable calculator is allowed. This revision focuses on what the exam actually tests, not on every fact you could learn.

🔥 FREQUENTLY TESTED Section A's composition is consistent over the years: 1.1 MCQ (20 × 1 = 20); 1.2 match Column A (photo) to Column B (5); 1.3 choose the term from a word block (5); 1.4 choose the correct word in brackets (5); 1.5 name the icon from a picture (5). These are 40 high-yield marks that are almost entirely lower/middle order.

⚠️ COMMON MISTAKE The internal B split can differ from one paper to the next: some papers set Q2 (Mapwork) 35 + Q3 (Foreign Exchange) 15, while others set Q2 30 + Q3 20. Whatever the split, Section B stays 50 marks. Question 2 and 3's calculations must ALWAYS be shown, and Question 3 is rounded to TWO decimal places.

Middle order (application) dominates the paper. The higher-order marks sit especially in Section B's calculations and in "Do you think ...? Motivate" paragraphs. So practise until you can do Sec. B blindfolded.

⭐ EXAM FAVOURITE Prioritise Section B (MTP + FET). It carries the most marks, is the most calculation-intensive, houses the most higher-order marks, and has the most predictable question types. Together Mapwork/Tour Planning and Foreign Exchange make up about a quarter of the paper. It is also the easiest section to practise to mastery.

⚡ MUST MEMORISE

Show all calculations in Question 2 and 3 and round Question 3 to 2 decimals, otherwise you lose method marks.
Direction right: EAST = add (+), WEST = subtract (-). One hour per time zone.
Multiply vs divide: foreign → rand = multiply by the rate; rand → foreign = divide by the rate. BBR (bank buying rate) is lower than BSR (bank selling rate).
Know the three memorise lists: world icons per country, SA heritage sites (name/type/province), and the BCEA figures. They appear in EVERY paper (Sec. A + C + D).
Do-not-confuse pairs: political situation vs unforeseen event; jet lag vs flight fatigue; green vs red channel; image of staff vs company.

ONE-MINUTE SUMMARY

One 200-mark, 3-hour paper; five sections (A 40, B 50, C 50, D 30, E 30). Section B (Mapwork + Foreign Exchange) is the centre of gravity: most marks, most higher order, and the most practisable. Application (middle order) dominates. Show calculations, round Question 3 to 2 decimals, and memorise the three core lists (icons, heritage sites, BCEA figures).

What earns marks: allocating time according to weight, tackling all questions, showing calculations, and not wasting the easy Sec. A + CC marks.

💡 EASY MARK Section A is 40 quick, high-yield marks from all topics mixed. It is almost entirely lower/middle order (recognise, name, choose). If you know the three memorise lists (icons, heritage sites, BCEA figures) and the do-not-confuse pairs, these are the easiest 40 marks in the paper. NEVER rush them.

Name the five question types of Section A and the technique that suits each one
Work a multiple-choice item by deciding on an answer first and eliminating the clearly wrong options before marking one letter
Work a match-column by crossing off the pairs you are certain of before guessing at the rest
Recall the do-not-confuse pairs that Section A reuses as traps: political situation and unforeseen occurrence, jet lag and flight fatigue, green channel and red channel, staff image and company image, BBR and BSR
Recite the three memorise lists that Section A keeps returning to: the world icons, the World Heritage Sites and the BCEA figures

The five question types of Section A

Some past papers use a slightly different A layout (1.1 MCQ 20; 1.2 brackets 5; 1.3 match-column 6; 1.4 word block 5; 1.5 match A/B/C 4 = 40). The types stay the same, only the order and marks differ.

⭐ EXAM FAVOURITE Section A reuses the same fact blocks year after year: the match-column is often the heritage sites (photo to name/province), 1.5 is a world icon from a picture, and the MCQs test the do-not-confuse pairs and payment methods. Know the memorise lists and you see the answers before you even read the options.

🔥 FREQUENTLY TESTED Do-not-confuse pairs that come back as MCQ traps:

Political situation (man-made: war, terrorism) vs unforeseen event (natural/sudden: earthquake, floods).
Jet lag (many time zones) vs flight fatigue (a very long flight).
Green channel (nothing to declare) vs red channel (goods to declare).
Image of staff (uniforms, hygiene) vs image of the company (logo, building).
BBR (bank buying, lower) vs BSR (bank selling, higher).

⚠️ COMMON MISTAKE Do not leave an MCQ number blank or double-mark it: only ONE letter per number. Do not use a term twice in a word block (each term fits only once). And do not guess a match-column before you have crossed off the sure ones first; the remaining ones then become easier.
