The 4 Golden Rules

  • READ the question twice. "State" only asks for facts; "Explain/Discuss/Evaluate" asks for a fact plus elaboration. Answer what is asked, not what you learned.
  • STATE + EXPLAIN = 2 marks per point. A plain list earns 1 mark each; as soon as you add a sentence that explains, you earn the second mark.
  • CONTEXT in scenario questions. Name the scenario business by name and quote from the scenario. "Motivate by quoting from the scenario" earns no marks without the quote.
  • MARKS = ANSWERS. An 8-mark question wants 8 facts (or 4 × state+explain). Count your facts against the marks.
📖 KEY DEFINITION

The real exam paper structure

Business Studies consists of TWO exam papers, each 150 marks and 2 hours (120 minutes), together 300 marks. Each paper has THREE sections and SIX questions:
  • Section A (Question 1 · 30 marks · COMPULSORY): multiple-choice questions (5 × 2), choose the word from the word bank (5 × 2) and match column A to column B (5 × 2). Answer EVERYTHING. About 30 minutes.
  • Section B (Questions 2, 3 and 4 · 40 marks each): direct and scenario questions. Answer any TWO of the three = 80 marks. About 60 minutes.
  • Section C (Questions 5 and 6 · 40 marks each): essay questions. Answer any ONE of the two = 40 marks. About 30 minutes.
Decide BEFOREHAND which Section C essay you're going to write, and don't get stuck on the compulsory Section A: mark it and move on.

Topic Weighting (CAPS)

Study in this order: all three Very High topics first, then the four High topics, then the Medium topics. The percentages are an average across both papers.

🔥 FREQUENTLY TESTED Five topics appear in every exam paper of the past three years (2022 to 2024): Business Environments, Human Resources & Legislation, General Management, Business Ethics and Marketing. If your time is limited, finish these five first: they guarantee the most marks. Legislation (the five labour laws) hits especially hard and is almost always tested within a scenario.

Before you start: 5-question warm-up

Answer this from memory before you revise. It will show you your weak spots (the answers are deliberately kept in the topic quizzes, not here):

  1. Name the six factors of the PESTLE analysis and say what each letter stands for.
  2. What does the acronym POSLC stand for, and what does each management function involve?
  3. Name the six labour laws with their acronyms and full names.
  4. What is the difference between skimming pricing and penetration pricing?
  5. Which TWO forms of ownership have unlimited liability?
ONE-MINUTE SUMMARY

Two exam papers, each 150 marks and 2 hours, together 300 marks. Each paper: Section A (30, compulsory), Section B (choose 2 × 40 = 80) and Section C (choose 1 × 40). Remember the 4 Golden Rules: read twice, state+explain=2 marks, use the scenario's name, and count marks = facts. Study the three Very High topics first.

IN THE EXAM
  • Where: Section A tests the whole syllabus with short facts; Section B and C test the major topics in depth through scenarios and essays.
  • Typical questions: "State", "Define", "Distinguish", "Identify from the scenario", "Discuss", "Evaluate the positive/negative impact", "Advise".
  • What earns marks: Structure. Use subheadings in essays, quote from the scenario, and always give fact + explanation where the action verb asks for more than "state".
