Engineering graphics is not about drawing neatly. It is about making a drawing that says exactly one thing, so that anyone can build from it.The GOAT Notes™

Two papers · 2 hours each · 100 marks each
BEFORE YOU WRITE · HOW THE PAPERS ARE BUILT EXAM FORMAT

What you must be able to do

Core content · The two papers

Grade 10 has no national paper. CAPS section 4.8 makes formal assessment internal, so your school or province sets the papers. There are two written papers: Paper 1 is Civil, drawn in first-angle projection, and Paper 2 is Mechanical, drawn in third-angle projection. CAPS prints each as 100 marks, so together they make 200 marks, which is 50% of the 400 promotion marks.

📖 KEY DEFINITION Converted mark: CAPS lets the final mark for each paper be converted to 100. No Grade 10 source states the raw total, so read your own cover.
⚠️ COMMON MISTAKE First angle for Paper 1, third angle for Paper 2. Swap them and the views and the projection symbol land in the wrong places.

Core content · Time

CAPS and the 2023/24 annual teaching plan (ATP) agree on 2 hours for each paper. A school's cover may print another time. The mid-year examination is one paper of 3 hours on Term 1 and Term 2 content, in five questions: general drawing principles and mechanical analytical 10, free-hand drawing 10, geometrical construction 20, isometric drawing 25 and mechanical working drawing 35.

Core content · The four questions of each paper

These ATP weights are on the converted-100 basis. The older CAPS 2011 table gave 20, 25, 25 and 30 in both papers; this guide follows the ATP. No choice rule is printed, so treat all four questions as compulsory.

⭐ EXAM FAVOURITE Revise the biggest block first. Civil working drawing is 45 of Paper 1's 100 marks, and mechanical working drawing is 35 of Paper 2's.

Core content · Where the marks sit, by topic

Topic marks are planned shares of the converted 100, not printed marks, so each carries a tilde (~).

💡 EASY MARK Easy marks hide in every drawing. Drawing principles, setting up a sheet and scales have no question of their own. They are marked inside every drawing, so correct line types, title block, dimensions and scale earn marks everywhere.

Core content · What a question looks like

Every question is a drawing, or a drawing plus labelling. The provincial revision packs we read (revision material, not papers) print a mark total beside each question and an assessment-criteria table. That table is where the marks are: each view or feature, hatching, dimensions, labels, centre lines, the cutting plane, the projection symbol, construction shown and line quality.

⚡ MUST MEMORISE Marking with the mistake (CAPS section 4.5.6): an early error carried through correctly is not penalised a second time, and a clear drawing gets the benefit of the doubt. Finish the drawing rather than stopping to repair it.

Core content · Thinking levels

CAPS section 4.3 sets one split for every formal task: about 30% lower order, 40% middle order and 30% higher order. On 200 marks that is 60, 80 and 60.

🔥 FREQUENTLY TESTED Win the 80. The middle band is the biggest, so practise drawing from given views and calculating.

Core content · Not in the written papers

The PAT and CAD (the design process) are a portfolio marked at school, and so are the course drawings. Free-hand drawing is examined in the mid-year paper only. Interpenetration, development and loci are not Grade 10 content. CAPS 2011 lists 1-point perspective and electrical circuits for Paper 1, but the ATP paper table has neither; this guide teaches them, gives them no November weight, and warns that your school's paper may still set them.

Core content · Instructions

Drawing instruments, an A3 board and a calculator are on the CAPS equipment list. Whether answers are drawn on printed sheets is not stated for Grade 10, so read your cover. Marks are ticks against a solution drawing and the criteria table.

🧠 ACTIVE RECALL

Which description of the two Grade 10 papers is correct?

A question asks you to draw a floor plan, an elevation and a section from the foundation to the slab. Which paper holds it?

A learner draws the views of a casting in first-angle positions in Paper 2. What is wrong?

Which question belongs in Paper 1 and not in Paper 2?

A drawing in front of you shows the third-angle projection symbol. Which paper is it most likely from, and which question does it feed?

In the ATP layout, which Paper 1 question carries the most marks, and how many?

How many marks does Paper 1 Question 3, solid geometry, carry in the ATP layout?

How many marks of Paper 1 lie outside the civil working drawing question?

A friend says civil working drawing is worth 30 marks of Paper 1. Where does 30 come from, and which figure does this guide follow?

You can revise only two Paper 1 topics before the exam. Which pair banks the most planned marks?

Which Paper 2 question asks for geometrical construction and an ellipse, and what is it worth in the ATP layout?

Which two Paper 2 questions carry equal marks?

How many marks do mechanical analytical and isometric drawing carry together in Paper 2?

Compare the two working drawing questions. Which statement is true?

Which revision plan for Paper 2 matches the planned marks?

How long is each Grade 10 paper according to CAPS and the ATP?

Together, what are the two papers worth, and what share of the 400 promotion marks is that?

A school sets Paper 1 out of 150 marks. What does CAPS allow so that the paper still counts as 100?

Which statement about the mid-year paper and the end-of-year papers is true?

Your cover says 2 hours 30 minutes for Paper 2. How do you treat the 2 hours that CAPS and the ATP print?

What split of thinking levels does CAPS set for every Grade 10 EGD formal task?

On the 200 marks of the two papers, how many marks go to middle-order thinking?

Which task is typical lower-order thinking in an EGD paper?

Which task is typical middle-order thinking?

A question gives two views of a solid and a cutting plane and says 'Find the true shape of the cut', with no steps given. Which thinking level fits?

Which work is marked at school as a portfolio and not written in the exam room?

Which topic has no question of its own and is marked inside every drawing?

Where is free-hand drawing examined in the ATP layout?

A learner measures one wall thickness wrongly, then draws everything else correctly from that value. What does marking with the mistake say?

1-point perspective is listed by CAPS 2011 for Paper 1 but is not in the ATP paper table. How should you treat it?

Paper 1 is the Civil paper. List its four questions in order, and give the number of marks the ATP gives each one.

State how long each paper is according to CAPS and the ATP, say why you must still read the cover of your own paper, and say what the two papers together are worth and what share of the 400 promotion marks that is.

A learner plans to revise Paper 1 in this order: scales, free-hand drawing, then civil working drawing last. Planned marks (ATP): civil analytical 15, descriptive geometry 15, solid geometry 25 and civil working drawing 45; free-hand drawing is set in the mid-year paper only, and scales are marked inside the drawings and have no question of their own. Use the planned marks to explain how you would change the plan, and give your reasons.

Explain to a Grade 8 learner how the two Grade 10 EGD papers are built, and why the raw total on your cover may not be 100.

Explain to a Grade 8 learner what 'marking with the mistake' means in a drawing paper and what you should do when you notice an early error.

Explain to a Grade 8 learner how to use the planned marks to choose what to revise first, and why the tilde means they are not promises.

ONE-MINUTE SUMMARY Two papers of 100 marks each, 200 in all: Paper 1 Civil in first-angle projection, Paper 2 Mechanical in third-angle, 2 hours each as CAPS and the ATP prescribe. Civil working drawing (45) and mechanical working drawing (35) are the biggest questions. Your school sets the paper, so its cover rules.
IN THE EXAM
  • The question weights are the ATP's; the marks per topic are planned and carry a tilde.
  • Scales, drawing principles and sheet set-up are marked inside every drawing.
  • Exam strategy shows how to spend the minutes on your own cover.
No question of its own · context for the assessment tasks
TERM 1 · INTRODUCTION TO EGD INTRODUCTION AND PURPOSE OF EGD

What you must be able to do

Core content · What EGD is for: scope and the main topics

This topic is not a question of its own. It is woven into the scenarios of tasks, so you meet it as a state, name, list or explain item.

📖 KEY DEFINITION EGD: internationally acknowledged principles of drawing, with academic and technical applications.
⚡ MUST MEMORISE State, name, list: one mark a fact, exactly as many facts as asked. Explain: a statement plus a reason, two marks.

Answer in the CAPS words. Internationally acknowledged and interpret and produce are the phrases a marker listens for, so a sentence about neat pictures earns nothing.

Memo: State what EGD teaches (2)
  • ✓: Internationally acknowledged principles of drawing
  • ✓: Used to interpret and produce drawings in Mechanical, Civil and Electrical contexts
Memo: Name the three technology contexts of EGD (3)
  • ✓: Mechanical Technology
  • ✓: Civil Technology
  • ✓: Electrical Technology
🔥 FREQUENTLY TESTED Mechanical, Civil and Electrical Technology: learn the three names, because a name-the-contexts item is three easy marks.
⚖️ LAWS / FRAMEWORKS One mark a fact: write exactly as many facts as the question asks for, each in its own short sentence.

Core content · Educational and career opportunities

A question may ask for a career or for a field. A field is a group such as engineering; a career is one job such as a land surveyor. Answer at the level asked.

💡 EASY MARK Pick the names you can spell and place in a field. Three careers from three fields beat one field named three times.
⚠️ COMMON MISTAKE A third career when the question says name TWO is ignored, and a job off the list, such as a pharmacist or a journalist, earns nothing.
Memo: Name THREE career fields that use EGD (3)
  • ✓: Architecture, for example an architect
  • ✓: An engineering field, for example mining
  • ✓: Land surveying, or another field from the list

Any three different fields from the CAPS list.

Core content · Human rights, gender, inclusivity and HIV/AIDS

Hang your answers on three ideas: respect for human rights, fairness between genders and access for every learner. Safety with sharp instruments is the HIV/AIDS link.

Memo: Explain why sharp instruments must not be shared (2)
  • ✓: Blood on the point can carry an infection such as HIV.
  • ✓: Sharing passes that infection to the next user, so each learner keeps their own.

Reason and result: both are needed for two marks.

⭐ EXAM FAVOURITE Give the reason first, then its result: blood on the point can carry an infection, and sharing passes it on. That pair is the two marks.
🧠 ACTIVE RECALL

CAPS describes the principles that EGD teaches as:

According to CAPS, learners in EGD ___ and ___ drawings.

In which technology context would a learner draw a floor plan and a foundation section?

Which order of EGD main topics begins with the topic that applies to ALL technological drawings?

An examiner writes beside a script: 'treats EGD as art.' Which answer would show the learner has understood its purpose?

Which of these is an engineering field on the CAPS list?

Which CAPS-listed career is mainly about designing outdoor spaces such as parks and gardens?

A memo says: 'Name any career that uses EGD (1).' Which answer would NOT earn the mark?

Mr Dlamini uses drawing software all day to produce drawings for other people. Which CAPS-listed career is this?

A question asks for THREE careers that use EGD and a learner writes 'engineer, pharmacist, journalist'. How many marks does the memo give?

Which of these is a sharp instrument in the EGD kit that must never be shared?

What do human rights mean for the EGD classroom?

Which is the safest way to carry a compass around the classroom?

A learner who is deaf joins the EGD class. Which step best shows inclusivity?

A teacher notices that only boys are asked to demonstrate on the board. What should she change?

A compass point breaks the skin of a classmate's finger. (a) Explain why sharp drawing instruments must not be shared. (2) (b) State TWO things that must be done straight away. (2)

Explain to a Grade 8 learner how to answer a 'name THREE careers that use EGD' question so that every mark is banked.

Explain to a Grade 8 learner what inclusivity means in an EGD class and give one example.

Explain to a Grade 8 learner the difference between a career field and a single career, with an example of each.

ONE-MINUTE SUMMARY Quote the CAPS wording for what EGD is, name careers from the list across different fields, and give a reason and a result when you explain why sharp instruments are not shared. Count the facts the question asks for and write exactly that many, each in its own short sentence.
IN THE EXAM
  • CAPS weaves this topic into assessment scenarios, so there is no question of its own.
  • Command words: state, name, list, explain.
  • Write exactly as many facts as the question asks.

Feeling the pressure? Take a breath.

Exam stress is completely normal. Here are a few things that actually work. None of this replaces a doctor or a trusted adult.

    Breathe in

Box breathing: 4 counts in, 4 hold, 4 out, 4 hold. Do it four times.

    Anxiety

    • Grounding: name 5 things you see, 4 you hear, 3 you can touch.
    • Exam morning: eat, drink water, arrive early, avoid last-minute cramming.
    • Reframe "I am going to fail" into "I have prepared, I will do my best".

    Concentration

    • Work in 25-minute blocks, then a 5-minute break (Pomodoro).
    • Put the phone in another room while you study.
    • One task at a time. Multitasking costs more than it saves.

    Sleep

    • Cramming all night backfires: sleep is when the brain locks in memory.
    • No screens for 30 minutes before bed.
    • The same bedtime every night keeps the brain sharp.

    Study habits

    • Active recall (testing yourself) beats passive re-reading by far.
    • Space your study across days; do not cram it all into one.
    • Practise past papers under time. That is exactly how these notes are built.
If it gets too much, talk to a parent, teacher or a trusted adult. You do not have to carry it alone. SADAG (free, 24 hours): 0800 567 567, or SMS 31393.
