Two 2-hour papers · 150 marks each
THE PAPERS EXAM FORMAT

What you must be able to do

Core content · Two papers, 150 marks each

Grade 10 Business Studies is two papers of 150 marks, each 2 hours. Paper 1 is Business Environments and Business Operations; Paper 2 is Business Ventures and Business Roles. Each paper sets 230 marks and you answer 150.

CAPS describes one 300-mark, 3-hour paper. The DBE split it in two by National Circular S11 of 2017; every paper we read uses two.

⚡ MUST MEMORISE Answer 150 of 230. Section A (30) is compulsory, then any TWO of Questions 2, 3 and 4 (80) and ONE of Questions 5 and 6 (40). Only the first two Section B answers and the first essay are marked.
⚠️ COMMON MISTAKE Answering a third Section B question or a second essay to be safe. It is not marked and its minutes are lost.

Core content · The three sections and the clock

Core content · Section A: thirty marks

💡 EASY MARK Section A is the cheapest 30 marks: 2 marks an item, no part marks.

Core content · Section B: Questions 2 to 4

Answer any TWO in 70 minutes. Questions 2 and 3 each take one main topic; Question 4 is Miscellaneous, 20 marks under each of two printed headings.

🔥 FREQUENTLY TESTED Identify and quote is 3 an item: the term 2, the quote 1. Only words quoted from the scenario earn the quote mark, and only when the term is right.

Core content · Section C: the essay

Answer ONE of Questions 5 and 6 in 30 minutes. A context paragraph of 3 to 5 lines is followed by FOUR bullet aspects, each opened by a command word: outline, explain, describe, discuss, advise or tabulate.

⭐ EXAM FAVOURITE A recent example earns originality. Use one not older than two years.

Core content · Three levels of thinking

Section A is mostly levels 1 and 2, Section B runs from 1 to 6, Section C is mostly 3 to 6. About 10% of the paper is problem solving (CAPS 4.4.2).

Core content · Where the marks are

Core content · What is not in the paper

⚠️ COMMON MISTAKE Revising Grade 11 content. Team stages, conflict and ethics leaked into one provincial paper but are not Grade 10.
🧠 ACTIVE RECALL
ONE-MINUTE SUMMARY Two papers, each 150 marks answered in 2 hours: Section A is compulsory, Section B is any two of three questions and Section C is one essay. The papers we read set no graph or picture.
IN THE EXAM
  • Learn the answer shapes now: identify and quote is 3 an item (term 2, quote 1), and the essay is 32 fact marks plus 8 insight.
  • Revise the High topics first and the four CAPS-only topics last.
  • Exam strategy shows how to choose, pace and write each shape.
Paper 1 · ~11 marks set · 5% of Paper 1
TERM 1 · MICRO ENVIRONMENT · PAPER 1 MICRO ENVIRONMENT

What you must be able to do

Core content · What the micro (internal) environment is: full control

📖 KEY DEFINITION Micro environment: the part of the business environment the business has full control over. Section A asks it as a one-line stem ending “full control over the … environment”.
💡 EASY MARK Full control: micro. Some influence: market. No control: macro.

Core content · Vision, mission statement, goals and objectives: telling them apart

📖 KEY DEFINITION Vision is where the business sees itself in future; mission is why it exists and what it aims to achieve. Word-list items: “explains what the business aims to achieve” is mission.
⚠️ COMMON MISTAKE Opportunities, threats and competitors are not micro components. Swapping vision and mission loses the whole 2-mark Section A item outright.

Core content · Organisational culture and its purpose

🔥 FREQUENTLY TESTED Explain the purpose of culture (6): culture is the business’s personality. Any relevant purpose is credited.
Memo-style answer: two points, each a fact plus an explanation. (6)
  • Point 1: fact ✓✓, explanation ✓: It guides how people act, because staff share one idea of how things are done.
  • Point 2: fact ✓✓, explanation ✓: It shapes the business’s identity, because customers recognise how it treats them.

A 4-mark version is two points, fact (1) plus explanation (1).

Core content · Organisational resources, management and structure as components

List FOUR components of the micro environment. (4)

A learner writes: vision, culture, resources, structure, mission.

  • Marked ✓✓✓✓: Only the first four count: vision, culture, resources, structure.
  • Ignored: “Mission” is fifth, so it earns nothing, even though it is correct.

Name exactly N items. Put your surest first.

⚡ MUST MEMORISE List FOUR (4 × 1), first four marked: vision, mission, goals and objectives, culture, resources, management and leadership, structure, business functions. Resources: human, physical, financial, information.

Core content · Spotting the micro component in a scenario and quoting it

⭐ EXAM FAVOURITE Quote only words copied from the scenario. A paraphrase or an added reason earns nothing, and the quote mark is withheld when the component is wrong.

Budget a little under a minute a mark: four marks, about three minutes. Write full sentences in Section B paragraphs, but only the term and the quote in an answer table.

Feeling the pressure? Take a breath.

Exam stress is completely normal. Here are a few things that actually work. None of this replaces a doctor or a trusted adult.

    Breathe in

Box breathing: 4 counts in, 4 hold, 4 out, 4 hold. Do it four times.

    Anxiety

    • Grounding: name 5 things you see, 4 you hear, 3 you can touch.
    • Exam morning: eat, drink water, arrive early, avoid last-minute cramming.
    • Reframe "I am going to fail" into "I have prepared, I will do my best".

    Concentration

    • Work in 25-minute blocks, then a 5-minute break (Pomodoro).
    • Put the phone in another room while you study.
    • One task at a time. Multitasking costs more than it saves.

    Sleep

    • Cramming all night backfires: sleep is when the brain locks in memory.
    • No screens for 30 minutes before bed.
    • The same bedtime every night keeps the brain sharp.

    Study habits

    • Active recall (testing yourself) beats passive re-reading by far.
    • Space your study across days; do not cram it all into one.
    • Practise past papers under time. That is exactly how these notes are built.
If it gets too much, talk to a parent, teacher or a trusted adult. You do not have to carry it alone. SADAG (free, 24 hours): 0800 567 567, or SMS 31393.
