Two 1 h 30 min papers · 75 marks each
THE PAPERS EXAM FORMAT

What you must be able to do

Core content · Two papers, 150 marks

Grade 10 Mathematical Literacy is two papers of 75 marks, each 1 hour 30 minutes, and every question is compulsory. The November exam is 75% of your year mark; the year's seven tasks are 25%. Your school or province sets the paper. The marks below are the mean of the two full sittings we analysed (2024 and 2025).

Two sittings that share some items: a guide, not a promise.
PaperTopicMarks of 75Share
1Finance~47~63%
1Data handling~24~32%
1Probability, inside other questions~4~5%
2Measurement~47~63%
2Maps and plans~25~33%
2Probability, inside other questions~3~4%
⭐ EXAM FAVOURITE Finance and Measurement are about 63% of their papers. Revise them first. Numbers, patterns and interpreting carry no marks of their own.

Core content · Four questions a paper

Both sittings set four questions a paper; Question 1 is a Level 1 opener of about 20%.

Mark ranges across the November papers we read.
QuestionPaper 1MarksPaper 2Marks
1Budget table or till slip14–18Units, time, a conversion14–20
2Bank statement, or budget and tariff24–27A scaled plan, or a tabletop20–21
3Bank fees and interest, or a data chart15–18A recipe and bottle, or a floor plan15–21
4Tariff table and usage graph16–18Assembly diagram and packing19–20
💡 EASY MARK Question 1 is the free 20%. It is knowing-level work on a document, where a bare correct answer can earn full marks. Bank it first.

Core content · Four levels of thinking

CAPS allows 5 either way on each share.

CAPS also sets a rule per paper (60 / 35 / 5 / 0 and 0 / 25 / 35 / 40), but the only sitting with readable level tags set 29 / 31 / 20 / 20 and 32 / 20 / 27 / 21. This guide follows the overall 30 / 30 / 20 / 20, the nearest to what was set.

⚠️ COMMON MISTAKE Paper 1 is not all easy. CAPS gives it no Level 4, yet that sitting put 20% there.

Core content · Calculator, π and formulae

⚡ MUST MEMORISE No formula sheet. Learn the percentage, VAT, mean and conversion recipes on the Reference Sheet.

Core content · What is not on this exam

⚠️ COMMON MISTAKE Grade 11 numbers do not apply. A Grade 11 paper is 2 × 100 marks. Break-even, income tax, compound interest and street maps are Grades 11 and 12; quartiles are Grade 12. June and term tests vary by school and province.

ONE-MINUTE SUMMARY Two papers, each 75 marks in 1 h 30 min, every question compulsory. Finance ~47 and Data handling ~24 make Paper 1; Measurement ~47 and Maps and plans ~25 make Paper 2; Probability hides inside other questions. Levels split about 30 / 30 / 20 / 20. There is no formula sheet.
IN THE EXAM
  • Finance and Measurement are about 63% of a paper each. Do not leave either to the end.
  • Expect a verify item in each paper; Strategy shows how to finish it.
Papers 1 and 2 · no marks of its own · inside every Finance, Data, Measurement and Maps calculation
TERM 1 · NUMBERS AND CALCULATIONS NUMBERS AND CALCULATIONS

What you must be able to do

Core content · Number formats, words and conventions

Question 1 tests conventions: 1,2 equals 1.2, and 1 000 000 equals 1,000,000. A negative balance is a debit. Flat 1214 (unit 14, floor 12) is a code, not a number.

Core content · Operations, order of operations and the calculator

Calculate 3,5 × (12 − 4,5) + 18 ÷ 4. (3)
  • ✓ M: Brackets: 12 − 4,5 = 7,5
  • ✓ M: Multiply and divide: 3,5 × 7,5 = 26,25 and 18 ÷ 4 = 4,5
  • ✓ A: 26,25 + 4,5 = 30,75

Estimate first: 4 × 7 + 4 = 32. A basic calculator works left to right: store 26,25 with M+.

Core content · Rounding in context

Each bench seats 8 learners. How many benches are needed for 83 learners? (3)
  • ✓ M: 83 ÷ 8 = 10,375
  • ✓ R: Every learner needs a seat, so round UP
  • ✓ A: 11 benches

Rounding off to 10 leaves 3 learners standing and loses R and A.

💡 EASY MARK Name the unit and the rounding. Cash rounds to the nearest 5c: R52,13 becomes R52,15.

Core content · Ratios

📖 KEY DEFINITION Ratio: same kind, no units (3 : 7). Rate: different kinds, with units; "/" means per (km/h).
Compost and soil are mixed in the ratio 3 : 7 to make 80 ℓ of potting mix. Calculate the litres of compost. (3)
  • ✓ M: 3 + 7 = 10 parts
  • ✓ M: 1 part = 80 ÷ 10 = 8 ℓ
  • ✓ A: 3 × 8 = 24 ℓ (check: 24 + 56 = 80)
⚠️ COMMON MISTAKE No units in a ratio. 40 cm to 2 m is 40 : 200 = 1 : 5 after converting (C) and simplifying (S), never 40 : 2.

Core content · Proportion: direct and inverse

Use the graphs. (a) Read the cost of 4 kg of apples. (b) Read what each pays when 6 people share. (c) Which graph is inverse proportion? Give a reason. (4)
  • (a) ✓ RT: Up from 4 kg to the line, then across: R80
  • (b) ✓ RT: Up from 6 people to the curve, then across: R200 each
  • (c) ✓ A: The second graph
  • (c) ✓ O: More people, less each: the curve falls and never touches an axis; the first graph is a straight line through O.

Direct: divide to 1 unit, then multiply. Inverse: multiply to the constant, then divide (6 workers × 8 days = 48, so 4 workers need 12 days).

Core content · Rates

Rice packs
PackMassPrice
A2 kgR31,98
B5 kgR74,50
C10 kgR158,00
Use the table. (a) Show that pack A costs R15,99 per kg. (b) Which pack is the best buy? (4)
  • (a) ✓ RT: Pack A: 2 kg for R31,98
  • (a) ✓ M: 31,98 ÷ 2 = R15,99 per kg
  • (b) ✓ M: B: 74,50 ÷ 5 = R14,90; C: 158,00 ÷ 10 = R15,80
  • (b) ✓ O: Pack B is the best buy: the lowest price per kg
⭐ EXAM FAVOURITE Best buy. Compare the price of one unit, then name the winner.

Core content · Percentages

⚡ MUST MEMORISE Forms. 50% = 50/100 = 0,5. Add 8%: × 1,08. Take off 20%: × 0,8.
🔥 FREQUENTLY TESTED Percentage of an amount. 35% of R1 240 = 0,35 × 1 240 = R434,00. Divide by 100 first and give rand answers to two decimals.
School shoes cost R650 and are now R552,50. Calculate the percentage discount. (3)
  • ✓ S: 650 − 552,50 = R97,50
  • ✓ M: 97,50 ÷ 650 × 100
  • ✓ A: 15%
⚠️ COMMON MISTAKE Wrong base. 97,50 ÷ 552,50 gives 17,6%. Divide the change by the ORIGINAL price, never the new one.

Feeling the pressure? Take a breath.

Exam stress is completely normal. Here are a few things that actually work. None of this replaces a doctor or a trusted adult.

    Breathe in

Box breathing: 4 counts in, 4 hold, 4 out, 4 hold. Do it four times.

    Anxiety

    • Grounding: name 5 things you see, 4 you hear, 3 you can touch.
    • Exam morning: eat, drink water, arrive early, avoid last-minute cramming.
    • Reframe "I am going to fail" into "I have prepared, I will do my best".

    Concentration

    • Work in 25-minute blocks, then a 5-minute break (Pomodoro).
    • Put the phone in another room while you study.
    • One task at a time. Multitasking costs more than it saves.

    Sleep

    • Cramming all night backfires: sleep is when the brain locks in memory.
    • No screens for 30 minutes before bed.
    • The same bedtime every night keeps the brain sharp.

    Study habits

    • Active recall (testing yourself) beats passive re-reading by far.
    • Space your study across days; do not cram it all into one.
    • Practise past papers under time. That is exactly how these notes are built.
If it gets too much, talk to a parent, teacher or a trusted adult. You do not have to carry it alone. SADAG (free, 24 hours): 0800 567 567, or SMS 31393.
