Engineering graphics is not about drawing neatly. It is about making a drawing that says exactly one thing, so that anyone can build from it.The GOAT Notes™

TERM 1 · INTRODUCTION TO EGD INTRODUCTION AND PURPOSE OF EGD

What you must be able to do

Core content · What EGD is for: scope and the main topics

Engineering Graphics and Design (EGD) teaches you to read and make technical drawings. A builder, a machinist and an electrician cannot phone the draughtsperson to ask what a line meant, so the drawing must say it alone. That is why EGD teaches internationally acknowledged principles: any trained person should read your drawing the way you meant it.

⭐ EXAM FAVOURITE A drawing must speak for itself: if the reader has to ask what a line means, the drawing has failed.
📖 KEY DEFINITION EGD: the subject that teaches internationally acknowledged principles of drawing, with academic and technical applications. Learners interpret and produce drawings within the contexts of Mechanical, Civil and Electrical Technology.

Read the chain as a build-up. General drawing principles (line types, lettering, dimensions) apply to every drawing. Free-hand and instrument drawing are the two ways of putting lines on paper. Projection and geometry show a solid object on a flat sheet. The mechanical and civil working drawings are where those skills become a drawing that a workshop or a building site can use.

⚠️ COMMON MISTAKE EGD is not art class. Neat lettering helps, but the marks and the jobs depend on accuracy, the correct line types and the agreed conventions, because someone must build from your drawing.

Core content · Educational and career opportunities

EGD keeps doors open. Every field below reads or produces drawings, so drawing at school prepares you for further study and training in them. Learn the groups first, then the names.

💡 EASY MARK When a question says name or list careers, take them from the CAPS list and write exactly as many as asked. One fact earns one mark.
⚡ MUST MEMORISE EGD works in three contexts: Mechanical, Civil and Electrical Technology.
Scenario: who reads which drawing on a school hall extension?

A school adds a hall. Match each person to the drawing they need.

  • Builder: Civil working drawing: the floor plan and foundation section show where the walls and footings go.
  • Machinist: Mechanical working drawing: the steel roof bracket is made from its views and dimensions.
  • Electrician: Electrical drawing: a circuit diagram shows how the lights and switches connect.
  • Governing body: Perspective drawing: a picture of the finished hall, drawn so non-experts see how it will look.

One project, four readers. Each person works from a drawing in the agreed conventions.

🔥 FREQUENTLY TESTED This topic has no question of its own. Its habits do: accuracy and the agreed conventions are marked in every drawing question you meet later.

Core content · Human rights, gender, inclusivity and HIV/AIDS

CAPS asks that these issues are included in EGD, so they are part of the subject.

Sharp instruments are the one place where this topic can hurt you, so treat the rule below as a habit and not a suggestion.

⚖️ LAWS / FRAMEWORKS Keep your own sharp instruments, never share them, carry them with the point covered, and tell your teacher at once about any cut.
🧠 ACTIVE RECALL

Which sentence best describes what Engineering Graphics and Design teaches?

In which three technology contexts do EGD learners interpret and produce drawings, according to CAPS?

Which one of these is a main topic of EGD in the CAPS list?

Ayanda's teacher says a bracket drawing must be readable by a machinist in another town. Which part of the scope of EGD is she stressing?

A classmate says: 'EGD is art, so a lovely picture with wobbly construction should earn full marks.' Which reply is correct?

Which of these careers is on the CAPS list of careers related to EGD?

What does CAPS call a person who prepares steel-structure, architectural, civil or electrical drawings?

Which pair are BOTH engineering fields named in the CAPS list?

Thandi loves making scale models of buildings and wants a career that uses EGD. Which career fits her best?

A learner must justify taking EGD for a career in industrial design. Which reason is strongest?

Which issues does CAPS say must be included in the EGD introduction?

Why are sharp drawing instruments linked to HIV/AIDS in EGD?

A new learner uses a wheelchair and cannot reach the back of a high drawing table. What does inclusivity ask the teacher to do?

Boys and girls in an EGD class both want the drawing boards at the same time. Which response respects gender equality?

Which learner's behaviour follows the safety rule for sharp instruments?

A classmate says: 'EGD is just neat lettering and pretty pictures.' (a) Explain why this is wrong by stating what EGD teaches. (2) (b) Name one career in a building field and one career in an engineering field that uses EGD. (2)

Explain to a Grade 8 learner why EGD teaches 'internationally acknowledged principles' and what that lets people do.

Explain to a Grade 8 learner why EGD is not the same as art class.

Explain to a Grade 8 learner what the sharp-instruments rule in EGD protects people from, and what to do.

ONE-MINUTE SUMMARY EGD teaches internationally acknowledged drawing principles so that drawings can be read and made within Mechanical, Civil and Electrical Technology. Its main topics run from general drawing principles to civil working drawing. It leads to careers from architecture to CAD, and its classroom respects rights, gender, inclusivity and safety with sharp instruments.
IN THE EXAM
  • This topic has no question of its own: CAPS says to weave it into the scenarios of assessment tasks, such as the PAT and test contexts.
  • Expect the command words state, name, list and explain, with one mark for each fact asked.
  • Grade 10 is the only grade where CAPS gives this row content, so treat it as your orientation to the whole subject.

Feeling the pressure? Take a breath.

Exam stress is completely normal. Here are a few things that actually work. None of this replaces a doctor or a trusted adult.

    Breathe in

Box breathing: 4 counts in, 4 hold, 4 out, 4 hold. Do it four times.

    Anxiety

    • Grounding: name 5 things you see, 4 you hear, 3 you can touch.
    • Exam morning: eat, drink water, arrive early, avoid last-minute cramming.
    • Reframe "I am going to fail" into "I have prepared, I will do my best".

    Concentration

    • Work in 25-minute blocks, then a 5-minute break (Pomodoro).
    • Put the phone in another room while you study.
    • One task at a time. Multitasking costs more than it saves.

    Sleep

    • Cramming all night backfires: sleep is when the brain locks in memory.
    • No screens for 30 minutes before bed.
    • The same bedtime every night keeps the brain sharp.

    Study habits

    • Active recall (testing yourself) beats passive re-reading by far.
    • Space your study across days; do not cram it all into one.
    • Practise past papers under time. That is exactly how these notes are built.
If it gets too much, talk to a parent, teacher or a trusted adult. You do not have to carry it alone. SADAG (free, 24 hours): 0800 567 567, or SMS 31393.
