Two papers · 240 marks · practical and theory
BEFORE YOU WRITE · HOW THE PAPERS ARE BUILT EXAM FORMAT

What you must be able to do

Core content · Two papers in the year-end examination

The year-end examination has two papers. Paper 1 is practical (Solution Development): you work on supplied files on a computer. Paper 2 is theory: you write. Each is 120 marks, so 120 + 120 = 240 marks. CAPS makes Grade 10 papers internal: your school or province sets them and they are moderated.

⭐ EXAM FAVOURITE 120 + 120 = 240. The mid-year pair is 100 + 100 = 200, on Terms 1 and 2 only.

Core content · Time, and what is not known

CAPS gives a minimum of 2,5 hours for each paper. One province's 2026 teaching plan prints 3 hours for the year-end papers. No source fixes one time, so this guide claims none.

⚠️ COMMON MISTAKE Read the cover of your own paper. Plan your minutes from the time printed there.

No Grade 10 November paper from 2022 on could be obtained. What follows comes from CAPS and one set of mid-year mark schemes (June 2025, 100 marks each). CAPS says the Grade 10 allocation will differ from the layout it prints for later grades.

Core content · Paper 1: the practical paper

CAPS splits Paper 1 as about 40% word processing, 30% spreadsheets, 15% presentations and 15% general (applying skills to new situations). On 120 marks that is arithmetic, not a CAPS figure, so each result carries a tilde (~). Each correct setting or formula earns a mark, and an HTML tag sheet is supplied for web questions. The June 2025 Paper 1 had four questions of 29, 22, 16 and 33 marks.

🔥 FREQUENTLY TESTED Start with the big two. Word processing and spreadsheets are about 84 of the 120 marks (~48 + ~36).
⚠️ COMMON MISTAKE Presentations are in dispute. The same CAPS page lists them at about 15% and says they are assessed in the PAT, not in the examinations. Read your own paper's instructions.

Core content · Paper 2: the theory paper

The June 2025 Paper 2 was 100 marks in three sections. Section A held three kinds of one-mark item: multiple choice, matching and true or false.

⚡ MUST MEMORISE That is a mid-year layout, not the November one. The year-end Paper 2 is 120 marks and no source we read prints its sections. Use June for the kinds of question, not the marks.
💡 EASY MARK Section A is the cheapest block. Every item is one mark, and the correction in a true or false item earns it.

No choice is printed in the mark schemes read; check your own paper's instructions.

Core content · Marks by topic and thinking levels

The planned marks are planning weights, not published marks: Paper 1 uses the CAPS percentages and Paper 2 scales the one June scheme. CAPS sets Paper 2 at 40% remembering, 40% understanding and applying, and 20% higher order; Paper 1 at 30%, 40% and 30%.

📖 KEY DEFINITION PAT (practical assessment task): a 100-mark school task in Terms 3 and 4. It and the term tests are school-based, not in either paper. Your promotion mark is SBA 40%, PAT 20%, Paper 1 20% and Paper 2 20%.
🧠 ACTIVE RECALL

How many marks is the year-end examination in all, and how are they split?

What do you do in the year-end Paper 1?

What does the mid-year examination cover, and how many marks is each paper?

A learner adds the two year-end papers and the two mid-year papers. What is the total?

A friend says the national Department sets one Grade 10 paper for every school. What does CAPS say?

Which share of Paper 1 does CAPS give to spreadsheets?

Which two parts of Paper 1 have the same CAPS share?

Spreadsheets are about 30% of Paper 1. About how many marks of the 120 is that?

Word processing is about 40% of Paper 1. How many marks is that, and how many are left for the other three parts?

Your paper has no presentation question, yet CAPS lists presentations at about 15%. What explains this?

How many marks was Section A of the June 2025 Paper 2, which was out of 100?

Which three kinds of item made up Section A of the June 2025 Paper 2?

Section B was 60 marks. How was it built?

Add June's sections: A 25, B 60 and C 15. What is the total, and what was Section C?

Why can you not treat the June layout as the November Paper 2 layout?

A friend says the PAT is worth more than one year-end paper. Which reply is right?

Name the three sections of the June 2025 Paper 2 and give the marks of each, then the total of the paper.

CAPS gives Paper 1 about 40% word processing, 30% spreadsheets, 15% presentations and 15% general. Work out the marks of each on the 120-mark paper, and say why each carries a tilde (~).

A friend studies only the June 2025 layout and says the November Paper 2 must be Section A 25, Section B 60 and Section C 15. Give TWO reasons the friend cannot be sure, and ONE thing to check instead.

Explain to a Grade 8 learner how the Grade 10 Computer Applications Technology examination is built: the two papers, their marks, and who sets them.

Explain to a Grade 8 learner what the June 2025 Paper 2 looked like, and why you cannot treat it as the November paper.

Explain to a Grade 8 learner how the planned marks by topic are worked out and how to use them to decide what to practise first.

ONE-MINUTE SUMMARY Two year-end papers of 120 marks each, 240 in all: Paper 1 practical, Paper 2 theory. Paper 1 is about 40% word processing, 30% spreadsheets, 15% presentations and 15% general. The June 2025 theory scheme (A 25, B 60, C 15) is a mid-year layout, so read your own cover.
IN THE EXAM
  • The papers are set by your school or province, so this is CAPS and one mid-year scheme, not a printed November paper.
  • Exam strategy turns marks into minutes; the reference sheet holds the planned marks by topic.
Paper 2 · ~14 marks · 12% of the paper
TERMS 1, 2 AND 4 · COMPUTERS AND HARDWARE COMPUTERS AND HARDWARE

What you must be able to do

Core content · Computers, ICT, data and information: the information processing cycle

Command wordWhat the answer needs
Name, state, identifyThe term or value only, with its unit
Briefly explain, describeA fact and its reason
Compare, differentiateA fact about each side
Recommend, motivateA choice, tied to the user's need
Name stages A to E (5)
  • A, B: Input ✓; processing ✓
  • C, D: Output ✓; storage ✓
  • E: Communication ✓
Differentiate between data and information (2)
  • Data: Raw facts that have not been processed ✓
  • Information: Data that has been processed and has meaning ✓
⚠️ COMMON MISTAKE A report is not data. Marks processed into an average are information.

Core content · Computing devices: multi-purpose devices, dedicated devices and convergence

A classify item gives a device and asks for its type and the reason.

Classify P to U, then explain convergence (4)
  • P, T, R: Multi-purpose ✓ (they run many programs)
  • Q, S, U: Dedicated ✓ (an embedded computer does one job)
  • Convergence: Functions from separate devices combined in one ✓, as in a smartphone ✓
📖 KEY DEFINITION Embedded computer: the small computer inside a dedicated device.

Core content · Input and input devices: keyboard, mouse, pointing, scanning, reading, video, audio and biometric input

Scenario items describe a device. Name it, then give its use. A square pattern that opens a web page on a phone is a QR code.

State TWO advantages of a barcode system in a shop (2)
  • 1: Prices are read faster at the till ✓
  • 2: Fewer pricing errors, or stock is updated automatically ✓
State TWO disadvantages of a wireless mouse: one about power, one about the connection (2)
  • Power: It needs batteries or charging ✓
  • Connection: The signal can drop, lag or be disturbed by other devices ✓
🔥 FREQUENTLY TESTED Read the facts off the picture. In the June 2025 mid-year Paper 2 read for this guide, 12 of Question 4's 15 marks were hardware, including a QR code and barcode advantages.

Core content · Output and storage: output devices, hard copy and soft copy, storage devices, media and capacity

Output items ask for hard or soft copy and a printer; storage items ask for a unit and a comparison.

Complete the role and the copy for V to Z (5)
  • V, Z: Input ✓; storage ✓
  • W, X: Output, soft copy ✓; output, hard copy ✓
  • Y: Output, soft copy ✓
Convert 3 TB to GB; the question states 1 TB = 1 000 GB (2)
  • Working: 3 × 1 000 ✓
  • Answer: = 3 000 GB ✓
Compare an ink printer and a laser printer (2)
  • Ink: Sprays liquid ink; suits colour ✓
  • Laser: Fuses toner; prints sharp text quickly ✓
⚠️ COMMON MISTAKE Give the unit. “3 000” alone loses the mark; write GB. A hard copy is paper, a soft copy is a screen.

Core content · Processing: the motherboard, the CPU and memory, and speed in GHz

A sketch with lettered parts asks you to name each part and to state what GHz measures.

Name parts A to E and state what GHz measures (6)
  • A, B, C: CPU ✓; RAM ✓; ROM ✓
  • D, E: Storage ✓; motherboard ✓
  • GHz: Processor speed ✓
💡 EASY MARK Free marks: RAM is cleared when the power goes off; ROM and storage keep their contents.

Core content · Ports, connectors and peripheral devices: cabled and wireless connections

Port items show sockets A to D; name each. A laptop with only USB-C needs the adapter shown to reach an HDMI projector.

Name ports A to D (4)
  • A, B: USB-A ✓; HDMI ✓
  • C, D: Audio jack ✓; USB-C ✓

Core content · Reading a computer's configuration and choosing hardware for a scenario

Answer yes or no for each need, with a reason from the card.

Sipho has R7 000, types assignments, keeps 100 GB of photos and presents with an HDMI projector. Does the laptop meet his needs? (4)
  • Budget: Yes: R6 299 < R7 000 ✓
  • Storage: Yes: 256 GB > 100 GB ✓
  • Projector: Yes: HDMI port ✓
  • Typing: Yes: 4 GB RAM is enough ✓

A bare yes earns nothing.

Feeling the pressure? Take a breath.

Exam stress is completely normal. Here are a few things that actually work. None of this replaces a doctor or a trusted adult.

    Breathe in

Box breathing: 4 counts in, 4 hold, 4 out, 4 hold. Do it four times.

    Anxiety

    • Grounding: name 5 things you see, 4 you hear, 3 you can touch.
    • Exam morning: eat, drink water, arrive early, avoid last-minute cramming.
    • Reframe "I am going to fail" into "I have prepared, I will do my best".

    Concentration

    • Work in 25-minute blocks, then a 5-minute break (Pomodoro).
    • Put the phone in another room while you study.
    • One task at a time. Multitasking costs more than it saves.

    Sleep

    • Cramming all night backfires: sleep is when the brain locks in memory.
    • No screens for 30 minutes before bed.
    • The same bedtime every night keeps the brain sharp.

    Study habits

    • Active recall (testing yourself) beats passive re-reading by far.
    • Space your study across days; do not cram it all into one.
    • Practise past papers under time. That is exactly how these notes are built.
If it gets too much, talk to a parent, teacher or a trusted adult. You do not have to carry it alone. SADAG (free, 24 hours): 0800 567 567, or SMS 31393.
