Every distinction begins with one topic at a time.- start now
Section A of the paper is Question 1: short definitions, a column-matching item and four-option multiple choice, worth 50 marks in total. The examiner draws this question roughly evenly from the three content groupings that make up Section B: Question 2 (Physical Farm Planning), Question 3 (Business Planning, Entrepreneurship, Marketing and Management) and Question 4 (Financial Planning, Recording, Harvesting and Value Adding). The Examination Guidelines state plainly that definitions form part of the examinable content every single year, so treat this section as a quarter of the whole exam rather than a warm-up act.
| Term | Definition in your own words |
|---|---|
| Natural resources | Everything nature supplies that farming draws on, such as soil, water, climate and vegetation. |
| Carrying capacity | The TOTAL number of large stock units (LSU) a piece of veld can sustainably carry, calculated as area divided by grazing capacity. |
| Grazing capacity | The number of hectares ONE large stock unit needs, based on the veld's condition; varies with rainfall and plant composition. |
| Camp system / rotational grazing | A management practice in which animals are moved between camps so every camp gets a rest period to recover. |
| Precision farming | Using technology such as GPS, GIS and variable-rate application to base farm management decisions on small, specific zones of a field rather than treating the whole field as one unit. |
| Term | Definition in your own words |
|---|---|
| Entrepreneur | A person who identifies an opportunity, accepts risk, and organises resources to start and manage a new business venture. |
| Business plan | A written document setting out a venture's purpose, resources, marketing strategy and financial outlook, used to secure funding and to track progress. |
| Cost-plus pricing | A pricing strategy in which the producer works out the total cost per unit and then adds a profit margin to arrive at the selling price. |
| Producer organisation | A body that producers of the same product join so that they can jointly afford research, marketing and representation, e.g. a grain producers' organisation. |
| The management process (POMCC) | Five consecutive management tasks: Planning, Organising, Motivation-Leadership, Control, and Coordination-evaluation, carried out continuously by a manager. |
| Term | Definition in your own words |
|---|---|
| Cash flow statement | A financial statement that shows the actual cash moving in and out of the business over a period, excluding non-cash items such as depreciation. |
| Income and expenses statement | A financial statement that compares all income and expenses for a period to determine the net profit or loss. |
| Balance sheet | A financial statement that shows the business's assets, liabilities and owner's equity on a specific date. |
| Depreciation | The gradual decrease in the value of an asset, such as a tractor, as it ages and is used. |
| Value adding | Any process that changes a raw farm product so that it is worth more to the consumer, e.g. milk processed into cheese. |
Q: Match the term in Column A to the correct description in Column B: (1) Carrying capacity (2) Depreciation (3) Entrepreneur (4) Cash flow statement.
A: Description X ("the decrease in an asset's value over time") matches (2) Depreciation, not (1) Carrying capacity, because carrying capacity concerns ANIMALS and VELD, not assets. The trick is to identify each term's subject area (resources, finance, business) before attempting to match anything.
∴ Sort terms by subject area before matching columns; this prevents logical errors, not just wording slips.
