Six subjects, one numberSes vakke, een getal
The NSC turns every mark into a level from 1 to 7. Many universities add up the levels of your six best subjects and leave Life Orientation out, so the top score is 42. UKZN, NWU and UFS give 8 points for 90% and up. Wits counts seven subjects including Life Orientation and adds 2 for English and Mathematics from 60%. UCT adds up your percentages out of 600, and Stellenbosch looks at your average. UP, UJ, Wits, UCT, Stellenbosch, UKZN, NWU and UFS make early, provisional offers on your final Grade 11 marks. Applications usually open in the first half of matric year, and some courses, such as Medicine, close early. Your APS and your pass are two different thingsJou APS en jou slaag is twee verskillende dinge
You pass matric with 40% in your home language, 40% in two more subjects and 30% in three more, and you may fail one subject. A degree pass also needs 50% in any four subjects other than Life Orientation, plus 30% in the language the university teaches in. Since 2018 those four can be any subjects: the old list of “designated subjects” no longer applies. A diploma pass needs 40% in four.
